The Zodiac is the track or the belt through which all the planets pass. The Zodiac is a celestial wheel of 360 degrees.
It is divided into 12 equal parts of 30 degrees each called Rasi or Signs.The first point of Mesha, which is the beginning of the Zodiac, is also the first point of Ashwini(Star).
